American Airlines flight AA-141 was en route from London’s Heathrow Airport to JFK International Airport in New York when crew reported a technical problem.

The Boeing 777-200 jet was about 90 minutes into its journey and 300 kilometres south west of Shannon when the crew opted to turn around and divert to the Mid-West Airport.

The crew had been in radio contact with controllers at the Irish Aviation Authority’s North Atlantic Communications Centre at Ballygirreen in Co Clare at the time.

They advised controllers of an issue with a "battery discharging" and had been advised by their operations centre not to continue across the Atlantic.

Once cleared to turn around, the crew immediately began descending from 40,000 feet as it may its way towards Shannon.

The flight landed safely at ten past ten and taxied to the terminal where engineers were waiting to investigate the matter.
